Bucegi National Park

Situated in the Eastern part of the middle Carpathians and including the entire Bucegi mountain, Bucegi National Park unravels in front of the viewer like an amphitheatre with a southern opening and limited by steeps that often exceed 1000m. With a tectonic-structural and morphohydrographic western limit and with Valea Brateiului and Saua Bucsa in the south which separate the Bucegi mountains from the Leaota mountain, in the North imposing through a tectonic-structural steep (slope area), fragmented by glacial valleys that overtakes Culoarul Rasnovului and Clabucetele Predealului with 1200 – 1400 m and to the East Culoarul Prahovei forms the best defined limit and the most impressive tectonic-erosive steep in Romania (Prahova Steep), which has 1000-1500m high uneven areas and is fragmented by many valleys or fluvial floods, with springs and cascades.

The physiognomy of the Bucegi mountain betrays structure and lithology as basic elements in its territorial individualization. The main geographic North is Peak Omu (2505m), which corresponds to an area where conglomerates include in their mass blocks of crystalline rocks and limestone. Two semi-geometrical lines of relief with peaks alignments come out from this peak : the Eastern peaks limit Prahova Steep (Costila 2498m, Caraiman 2384m, Jepii Mici 2143m, Jepii Mari 2072m, Piatra Arsa 2001m, Furnica 2103m, Varful cu Dor 2030m and Vanturis 1851m) and the Western limit Bran Steep (Doamnele 2181m, Tataru 1998m, Lucacila 1895m).

The water resources of the Bucegi mountain confirm the influence of the bioclimatic layering, structure and lithology. The main hydrographic arteries are Ialomita which forms a symmetrical basin and Prahova which through its affluents owns the biggest area in Bucegi.

The quality of the view in the Bucegi mountain is a basic component of tourism activities. In Bucegi are the oldest cottages in the Carpathians at big altitudes, a rich wire transport system, modernized roads, touristic and alpinism tracks. The wold of Bucegi and Prahova Steep make up a permanent tourism area with maximum requests in the winter and the Valley of Ialomita a true touristic axis of the mountain which focuses the roads system, signs and cottages in the zone.

The Bucegi Natural Park is located on the administrative territory of 3 counties: Dambovita, Prahova and Brasov, being situated outside the built-up areas of Sinaia, Busteni, Azuga, Bran, Simon, Moeciu.
